Anyone who knows John Thomas will tell you this. He has a knack for uncovering gems. And his professionalism and work ethic are unparalleled.
It is my pleasure to feature him on the blog today.
Q1: Hello John, thank you for answering my questions. First, tell us who you are.
A1: I am a Dubai-based Curator and Editor of an e-Publishing venture – The Networker Publications. My company is into publishing of authoritative eZines, eJournals and blogs on Social media, Technology, Gadgets and various other specialized topics.
I started my career as an advertising copywriter after graduating in Journalism and Mass Communication in 2007. After moving to Dubai in 2008, I ventured into publishing and took over as Editor of Networker Magazine and later as Managing Editor of UAE Top5 website. I’ve also had a short stint as Community Manager with a multinational agency where I managed social media for fortune 500 companies, including Toshiba Middle East and ISUZU.
Q2: Why did you decide to become a content curator?
A2: The internet has never failed to amuse me and overwhelm me at times with its sheer volume of information. This information overload has also resulted in me feeling frustrated quite often, when I’ve had to spend precious hours searching for info.
Looking for info on the internet is like searching for a needle in a haystack. That’s when I realized the importance of curation. The moment I realized ‘Curation is king,’ I decided to be a content curator.
Q3: You are the creator of The Networker, An e-Publishing house that brings out some of the most authoritative blogs and eMagazines on Social Media, Technology and Gadgets. Would you tell us a little more about that?
We are living in an era when people use more iPads and e-readers than ever before. This eGeneration are people on the move, who like their news to reach them wherever they go. Networker Publications was founded to cater to these jet setters on the go, in a convenient way.
Networker Publications also seeks to pave way for an environmentally friendly paperless society. I have cherished a dream from a very long time – A powerful dream of working in a completely wireless, paperless office. A world where all the info one needs is available on one’s mobile device. I am working towards making this a reality.
My company started off with two flagship titles – The Social Networker and the Social Curator. Today, Networker eVentures publishes 18 eZines, 3 eJournals and 4 blogs covering a wide range of specialized interests including Photography, Fashion, Travel, Advertising, Sports, Automobiles, Business, Gadgets, etc. The ezines are available both on web and mobile through Flipboard app on the App Store, Google Play, Windows Store and Black Berry World.
Q4: According to you, what’s the future of social content: creation or curation?
A4: As much as we need good content and people to create it, we also need to be able to get it when we most need it. So, we need good content curators – the experts who glean and gather the valuable information, separate it from the weeds, and present it to us in an easy to digest manner.
Without doubt, curation is the future of social content.
Q5: How do you use curation to promote your expertise?
A5: I have been deeply immersed in social media for the past three years. My expertise lies around this area, so I try to use my knowledge of the subject as well as my experience in the media and e-publishing industry to curate high quality content. I carefully handpick the most relevant, highest quality digital information, add my own insights and inferences to it, and present it through various digital offerings to cater to a wide cross section of readers. I
am en early adopter and like to try every single tool and app in the market to see how it could be used to add value to my clients’ social media presence. I started out gathering the top free tools to be awesome on social media. Now I have a huge collection of both free and paid tools here.
Q6: Anything else you would like to add?
I am a Xeeme Open Power Networker. I am open to connecting with like-minded individuals.
