Social media has changed a lot in its 5 decades of existence.
Thousands of platforms have launched, while only a few have withstood the test of time. Facebook and LinkedIn have been around for more than 10 years. StumbleUpon is 13. Live Journal was created in 1999. And Classmates will blow its 20th candle next year.
Keeping up with everything that happens in social media requires 24/7 monitoring, which is impossible. Fortunately, some agencies will do the work for us. For example, look at the map Overdrive Interactive created below.
Note: There are a few social platforms missing, notably new kid on the block Ello. However, it is a great starting point to understand the scope of social media.
