There was a time, not long ago, when optimization was a word used only next to the phrase “search engine”. Now, small businesses and entrepreneurs interested in getting more exposure for their brands and products online also need to optimize their content for social networks.
The problem is that platforms like Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, and Google+ utilize specific markup tags. So, knowing if your site complies with them can be a challenge. Thankfully, there are tools that help make things easier for us. One of them is KnowEm’s Social Media Optimizer.
To use the optimizer, visit http://smo.knowem.com/. Then, enter the URL of you choice and click “Check It”. Each tab is dedicated to a network and displays the most important markup tags for it (with an optimization score):
- Facebook / LinkedIn: Open Graph
- Twitter: Twitter Cards
- Google Rich snippets
- Other tags: geo / local / semantic
- Standard search engine optimization
Any missing markup? The service also links to relevant resources to help you find it.
As you can see in the screenshot above, the optimizer gives you a rough approximation of what users will see when they share the content on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Google+.
Note that results are for individual pages, not entire sites. So, if you want to check a blog post, make sure you enter its dedicated link.
