Social Media Slant – Social media from a human perspective

The perfect mixture for effective social media (Infographic)

social media productivity

“How many hours should I spend on social media every day?” is a question that people have kept asking me ever since I started coaching. My answer is always the same: It is not the number of hours that matters. What matters is how well you use the time you have.

Unless you are a community or social media manager, you do not have to check your profiles 24 / 7. As a small business owner or solo-preneur, you already are busy enough. So, avoid unnecessary stress if you can!

Do you know you can achieve a lot in just 60 minutes? Yes, you read it right — 60 minutes a day! How? Dendrite Park‘s infographic will give you a good idea of what you need to do.

Since the graphic was designed in 2013, some social media platforms are missing. Instagram and Pinterest were not as mainstream as they are today. And, of course, you do not have to be on Facebook or Twitter if your audience likes hanging out somewhere else. Nothing is set in stone.

Social media rookies, take the time to familiarize yourself with the platforms you use. Each serves a specific purpose. For example, Facebook users want to be entertained while Tweeps are more interested in current events around the world, and LinkedIn members look for actionable content related to their professions.

I really like the suggestion to spend half of your time focusing on content creation and curation. Even if you can’t publish posts every day, forcing yourself to frequently write and relay helpful posts will help you develop your creativity, productivity, and consistency. You will end up doing things faster and better…

And remember: People love contextualized shares. So, don’t just drop links and leave.

NB:  If you are more into weekly goals, here are some suggestions:

  • Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings (30 minutes): Respond to blog comments
  • Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday afternoons (20 minutes): Engage with your audience on social networks
  • Evenings (15 minutes): Skim through your social feeds and bookmark interesting content to read and share
